Let’s Talk About Menopause — Because Silence Isn’t Helping Us
Share
Growing up, menopause was everywhere — but no one talked about it. I watched my mom, grandmother, aunts, and other women in my life go through this major change in complete silence. The only clue I had was the constant fanning — whatever paper, envelope, or magazine was closest became a makeshift fan because they were suddenly “so hot.” But beyond that? Nothing. No conversations about symptoms. No explanations. No emotional support. Just quiet suffering.
So when menopause started for me, I only recognized one thing: the heat. Everything else felt like a mystery I was supposed to solve alone.
At work, I saw other women going through it too — the mood swings, irritability, brain fog, and the struggle to stay focused during severe hot flashes. We were all trying to function, trying to stay professional, trying to stay ourselves… while our bodies were doing something completely different.
And then one day, during a conversation with a few ladies at work, I learned something that truly shocked me. Two married women — women with loving husbands and stable marriages — were sleeping in separate bedrooms. I remember saying, “I don’t think I could do that,” and asking why. They chuckled and said, “You’ll understand one day.”
Later, one of them told me privately that it was because of night sweats. Not marital issues. Not conflict. Just the intensity of menopause symptoms. That moment hit me hard. Women were changing their entire sleeping arrangements, losing intimacy, losing comfort — and still not talking about it.
Why are we so reluctant to talk about something that affects our sleep, our relationships, our confidence, and our daily lives?
This is why talking about menopause matters now.
We deserve honesty.
We deserve community.
We deserve support.
We deserve to stop suffering in silence.
The Problem So Many of Us Face
Menopause isn’t just hot flashes. It’s mood changes, sleep disruption, brain fog, irritability, anxiety, and a body that feels unfamiliar. And when no one talks about these symptoms, every woman ends up thinking she’s the only one struggling.
I saw it at work — women trying to stay focused while battling severe hot flashes. Women snapping or withdrawing because their mood was swinging wildly. Women exhausted from night sweats that soaked through sheets. Women who felt embarrassed, confused, or ashamed because they didn’t understand what was happening.
And then my younger sister entered this phase, and her symptoms were even more intense. While I was sweating and noticing changes, she was battling frustration, overwhelm, and sometimes outright hostility because she couldn’t find relief. Watching her struggle made me realize how deeply menopause affects not just our bodies, but our relationships, our confidence, and our daily lives.
The real problem?
Most women are navigating all of this alone, without tools, without guidance, and without a safe place to talk about what they’re experiencing.
